To mine an ore, it must first be discovered.
Prospecting an ore requires a valid location to be discovered
(or created through buying an area into the module, such as a mine/cavern)The Prospector may attempt once per week under the supervision of a DM, to make a roll in order to discover a vein of ore.
After discovering the ore, the prospector must then make another roll in order to mine it.
Mining ores is a risky business that can have a chance of destroying the vein, and may also, in extreme cases, injure the miner.
Ores of any kind are key in many other crafts, and can be quite valuable. The risk and time put into procuring ores is often well worth the reward.
Prospectors can also attempt to find gems. If they are lucky, they may be able to find hidden gemstones while mining for ores. Or, if they are very lucky, they may discover a whole gem vein, where they may procure a good deal more of the valuable stones.
When prospecting for ores and likewise, when mining them. The skill of the prospector/Miner is a relevant factor in the attempt. For example, a master prospector/Miner would be able to find and mine ores such as Iron or steel with greater ease, while a novice would struggle a good deal more.
The higher the skill of a Miner/Prospector, the more resources that become available to them.
